"The Hidden"
My work is an exploration of the subconscious. The idea of concealment is universal; we as humans instinctively choose to hide weakness and avoid vulnerability. Inspired stylistically by Vanitas alongside artists René Magritte, Matthew Stone and Anne Ferran, this work grasps upon timeless values of perfectionism. One can almost guess what lies underneath the fabric, but this is ultimately an assumption. References to common symbols such as the skull and flowers explore ideas of power and mortality, but also beauty and life. Often the most beautiful or powerful elements of one's personality are left exposed as a method of maintaining a perfected version of themselves. Concealment provides security and comfort, but also an unavoidable and perhaps dangerous sense of mystery. What happens when we lift the cloth?
